Duplo Class
at Continuing Education

on a cold
January 22, 2005
The young students that came to the DUPLO Class at Marshall University Continuing Education
built with big LEGO materials.  They learned about stable construction methods-

one brick on two and two bricks on one so that all the cracks are covered.
Just building straight up is like straw or sticks and those buildings can fall over.
Over lapping bricks can be much stronger.

"Straw"           "Sticks"

and Bricks

Every one measured how tall they are in Soft, Quarto, Duplo, and inches.

The simple machine sets have gears and pulleys.
Crown gears can mesh at right angles.

This measuring devise uses gears.

So does this turn stile.

Small gear driving large gear goes slowly and large gear driving small gear goes fast.

The  story challenge for the last hour was about a pet that had to be rescued from a tall building.
The tall city buildings were made of different kinds of blocks and the rescue vehicles were made of Toolo.

How can the pet be rescued?

What would you do to help the pet?
