LEGO 2001 Miss Adventure
Challenge IV:  Food

Davis Creek Elementary 5th grade students are working on the LEGO Miss Adventure Challenges.  The scenario is that a ship wreck strands some victims on a deserted, tropical island.  The only supplies available are the items on board the ship and the island's natural resources.  The first challenge is to build a device to get to the island with as much of the ship's supplies as possible.  The second challenge is to construct a shelter on the island.  The third challenge is to find a way to get fresh water for the islanders.
The fourth challenge is to find a supply of food and a way to keep the survivors fed until help arrives.  Ben and Hector decided to take advantage of the trees to get coconuts and fruit native to this island.  Upon investigation our young explorers located some wild chickens that could provide fresh protein and also eggs.  Their food trap will be designed to trap the chickens.  It has an automatic door that closes after the chickens are lured inside.  Some chicken food is used as the bait.

A tree can be a good source of food.

Ben and Hector built a ladder to gain access to the food at the top of this tree.

Hector drew the designs for the food plan.  This design shows the ladder next to the tree.

Comparing the actual ladder to the virtual one.
In the beginning ideas abounded, the limits set were the pieces in the simple machine set.

DC LEGO Miss Adventure 4:  Food

Chicken Trap

I have learned that finding food and getting it are two very different things.  I wanted to eat something good so I decided to...
get some fruit like apples and oranges.   We will make a ladder and get the apples and oranges.  Let's keep those chickens that we see.
So we will make a pen.

Apple Picker

This is the ladder that we will use to pick the apples.

This is our trap when it is set it will catch chickens!
Beware chickens, beware! You will be breakfast at some point!

This our trap when the chickens are about to be trapped.
