The usual building structure with LEGO brick relays on the friction of studs on the top of one piece to the piece above.
However that is not a stable enough building technique to withstand dropping.
With beams, plates, and connectors right angles in all three directions can be made stable.
With just the elements from the Simple Machine sets build a stable box.
