Spring Hill
Fourth Grade Second Build

On September 13, I returned to Mrs. Withers fourth grade TAG class so the children could have more experience with the LEGO Simple Motorized Machine sets.  There were two new children to the class, bringing the total up to 12.  I reviewed the rules with the class to remind the ones that were there last time and also to introduce them to the new class members.  The children split into different paired groups this week and I asked them to work on a different project than the one they did the previous week.

The results were mostly pleasing.  There were few problems with the kids working together, none of them at all serious.  The kids again had fun constructing the machines they picked out of the instructions.  The kids did very well, we only had a couple mistakes where they used incorrectly sized pieces or didn't follow the instructions carefully.

One group in particular moved swiftly through the projects and actually completed two in the hour given.  The pair was quite pleased with themselves, as was I.  Another group had pleasing results with assembling their project, but due to the included rubber bands in the set being stretched out due to extensive use, their mechanism couldn't quite perform the task it was designed for.  Fortunately this setback didn't derail the group's determination.  They scoured the room for surplus rubber bands that would work and when that didn't work they devised a way to get their machine to work without all the necessary bands.
