When two gears mesh turning one clockwise makes the other turn counter clockwise.
When there is a gear train every other one goes the same direction.

Gears can change direction of motion at right angles.
With a pawl a gear will only go one direction.

Turning the handle once on this gear train makes the last follower travel around 25 times.
