Gears, Gears,

Gears Inside of What?

March 3, 2006
We see ourselves on the web.
The pictures of  the insides of last week's gear projects are on the web.
AIMS Bricklayers II
We are going to try to match up the outsides with the web pictures of the gears
just by trying out driving one side and checking out the output of the other.

With these big LEGO pieces we can test out the number of times a 40 tooth gear drives an 8 tooth gear.
And we can try out 24 to 40, 8 to 24 and all the other combinations.

We can check out different gears between the driver and follower. The gears between are called idlers.

What do we have to do to get the gears to go opposite directions?

Odd number of idlers - same direction.
Even number of idlers - opposite direction.
Different number and size of idlers
This matched up with one of the Mystery machines.

The 16 tooth gear is hard to find a correct place to mesh with the 8 or 24 or 40 tooth gears.
8 , 24, and 40 tooth gears. mesh easily on a beam.
