May 31, 2006 Each group made Mystery Machines of gear trains. Only the input and the output - driver and final driven axles were visible . From observing the direction and number of rotations the students figured out if the number of gears was even or odd and how many teeth were on the driver and driven gear. Turning was easy when the output was slow but hard when the output was fast. On a 3 to 5 ratio gear train it was great fun to figure out the angle one gear went when the driven gear went 360 degrees. |
