Big Creek High
takes on the
City Sites Challenge
May 14, 2003

A team of seven Big Creek High School students built a robot
and programed it to take on some of challenges
of the FIRST LEGO
City Sites.
FIRST LEGO League is a robotics team contest.
The team began setting up the playing field at 10:00 a.m.,
and quickly decided who would start building the robot
and who would start learning how to program the robot to perfrom eight different tasks, which included
They were one of  the most focused teams to participate in the FIRST LEGO contest,
and worked  from 10:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
planning, tweaking the programming, working together to figure out changes and planning their next strategies.
One program netted 62 points.
The Red Rover for Big Creek worked locally because the robot could be operated and the camera refreshed, but
when connecting to Davis Creek we could see only words and not the picture.
However, it was great to be connected and see the words from Mr. Cartwright after driving for 150 miles to Big Creek in McDowell County.
We could see that the LEGO City at Marshall University ran
because we could see the Touch sensor and light sensor indicators change.
However, we could see neither the camera from SENSORSCITY nor from Red Rover
in either Mr. Bishop's room or the computer lab.  I did see SENSORSCITY camera when set on Active X while at Gilbert.

The Welch newspaper came to see the students' work.
The robot showed off by fixing the bridge and moving the modular housing.

This week is National Transportation Week. Linda Hamilton and David Cartwright from
Nick  J. Rahall, II Appalachian Transportation Institute at Marshall University
are connecting the City at Marshall and the City at Big Creek over the Internet.
Linda Hamilton has used a portion of a grant from NASA WV Space Grant Consortium to help with the LEGO project.
