Students in the 5th grade a Davis Creek Elementary built eight of
the ten projects with instruction books on October 22, 2001.
1. Chair was not done today.
2. Draw bridge was built to the stopping point and
shown to have be a able to be raised with ease because of the counter weight.
Then at the end of the last step the bridge was ridged because ot the triangular
shapes. Usually the bridge is not motorized. These two students
added the motor block and lift arm to motorize the raising of the bridge
for a boat.
3. Drumming Machine was made to make many rhythms
by adding and changing a number of connectors in the 40 tooth gears.
It was music day.
4. Wipers were not made.
5. Flywheel car. With one large wheel at the
top of the gear train some energy was saved up and used for forward motion,
after a firm down and forward push. More pressure, longer push, and
another heavy wheel all added to the distance the car could travel.
6. Roller conveyor uses wheels to reduce friction.
It can be raised at an angle.
7. Merry - go - round uses many kinds of gearing
and pulley connections. The crown gears are for changing direction
at 90 degrees. The pulleys allow slippage that is helpful for safety.
The motor block in instruction book G was added.
8. Turnstile shows gearing up and gearing down.
The yellow indicators can be placed on the 1 to 1 gearing to count 4 people,
on the axle with 5 to 1 gearing to count 20 people, and on the axle with
a gear train with all the gear train 1:1,5:1, and another 5:1 to count
100 people. A pawl and ratchet allows motion in only one direction.
9. The belt conveyor is motorized to allow many packages
to be carried per hour; however keeping up the pace over time is difficult
for people.
10. Crane uses pawl and ratchet or worm gear
in the motor block to keep the crane hook from dropping unintentionally.
