Gears and Magic String

October 7, 2008

The class tried out the Magic String project.

How it feels is as surprising as it looks.

One side is hard and short as the string around the axle of the 40 tooth gear is pulled.

But pulling on the string on the axle with the 8 tooth gear is easy and the string is long.

They looked at a real gear train in a old printer then tried figuring out some gear trains that work.

Some meshings work better than others.

The gears went different directions.

These gears mesh at right angles.
