RED ROVER GOES TO MARS PLAY
at Pea Ridge Elementary
22 March MM
A Theater for a Play

The first grade DUPLO builders and the 4th - 5th grade LEGO builders worked together the fourth week of their Spring After School Classes.  The students made a PLAY complete with theater, ticket booth , turnstile, pneumatic door, seating area, concession area, sign, stage, and curtains.  Dr. Liz Murray and parents helped.  One computer was up with the Davis Creek RED ROVER so students could get experience teleoperating the Mars Rover at Davis Creek Elementary.  One computer had these web pages from the last three weeks.  One computer had the LEGO CAD program with the Computer Aided Design dynamic instructions for the curtain project.  The large computer had LEGO Control Lab for programming all the motors, lights, and sound.
Starting to work on the building.
Work on the house.
The theater will have to be large.
What kind of food shall we sell?
How can we get the curtain to go the other way now?
How many people does the turnstile count?
At first students divided up into groups of two by what part of the project they wanted to do.
Pneumatic door and turnstile
What shall this say?

GREETINGS MARTIANS
Details of the theater are extra exit and bathrooms.
All groups kept track of the sizes of the other parts so that their part would fit.
An example was the size of the doorway for the pneumatic door.
Ticket selling.

RED ROVER GOES TO MARS 8:00
Astronaut Bob tells about the need for oxygen.
This play is hilarious!
RED ROVER GOES TO MARS 8:00
Then the parts were brought together and programmed.
The sign said
RED ROVER GOES TO MARS
8:00
We all like RED ROVER GOES TO MARS!
Thank you, Dr. Murray.
The play explained about the Red Rover Goes to Mars project of NASA and the Planetary Society.  Students will actually be involved in the up coming Mars missions. Our actors were "Astronaut Bob" and a girl astronaut and a boy astronaut telling about how students can get experience teleoperating and then write a essay to qualify for the mission.
The hilarious parts of the play were "Astronaut Bob" explaining the need for oxygen in a very low then very high voice.
